About Morrie A. Moss

In October 1992, the Board of Trustees of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art established the Morrie A. Moss Society to honor the civic and cultural philanthropy of the late Mr. Moss. With a charter membership of forty-six, including Mr. Moss himself, the Society has come to exemplify a commitment to the preservation and creation of excellence in the visual arts.
In combining business acumen and generous philanthropy, Morrie A. Moss had no equal in his lifetime in Memphis. Arriving in 1932, he captained several corporations and served on many boards of directors. Until his death in 1993, he and his late wife Lillian made significant donations to countless institutions and individuals.
The Brooks was singled out because of the museum’s dedication to high standards in acquisitions and education that closely matched Mr. Moss’s own collecting and continued learning. In addition to continued financial support and the donation of an extraordinary assortment of Old Masters, British Portraits, and French 19th-century Decorative Arts, Mr. Moss also demonstrated his commitment to the Brooks by allowing the Moss Society to be established during his lifetime, thus giving it a unique endorsement.
