Our final talk will look at the pluralism and globalism that distinguish late 20th-century and contemporary art from previous eras. Modernism’s formalistic experiments in abstraction will be brought to its most radical conclusions in Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, while the repetitive forms and ephemeral imagery of consumer culture would be celebrated by Pop Art. Movements that transcend the traditional boundaries of art will also be surveyed, including performance art, conceptual art, feminist art, land art, and street art.
