Harriet Cany Peale, (American, 1800 – 1869), Still Life with Lowestoft Bowl, 1857, Oil on canvas, Gift of Mr. Walter Nelson Pharr in honor of his mother, Mrs. Blanche R. Pharr  75.12

In Harriet Cany Peale’s “Still Life with Lowestoft Bowl,” the artist has depicted a bounty of shiny red and white grapes, along with several blemished apples. The bowl in the painting was made by The Lowestoft Porcelain Factory, a company based in Lowestoft, a town in Suffolk, England. Peale, an American painter, owned this bowl, so this still life not only shows the beauty of nature but also acts as a document of international trade. What special items would you would include in your still life, both man-made and natural?
